FLUID PARTICLES OF VULCANIC ASH

19 10 2017

Cultural Centre TOBAČNA 001, Ljubljana
Opening of the exhibition will be on Friday, 27 October at 7 p.m.

The exhibition Fluid Particles of Volcanic Ash is part of a multiannual project in which Marko Batista prompts the viewer to reflect on the problem of modern post-fact society in relation to technological progress. Technological systems are not perfect, predictable, self-contained and complete, but rather unstable, and it is precisely this point that serves as the premise of Batista’s exploration.

‘ART IN PUBLIC SPACE” EVENT

The intermedia project entitled Locus:303 originates from the installation Electronic Church by Marko Batista and Srdjan Deba (production Aksioma 2014, coproduction Forum Ljubljana) from 2014. It is an electroacoustic light sculpture that intervenes in the medieval architecture of the space.

The installation is a part of the ‘Art in Public Space’ event with the aim “… to emphasize the signifcance of contemporary art and to show its importance in public. The desire is to establish an equal partnership with urban planners and architects, as well as other creators of the public sphere. It is about connecting the elements between disciplines, between theoretical standpoints and practical use, between academic concepts and actual efectiveness” says curator Matena Bassin.

ACID:LAB SOUND STATION

The tractrix contour has characteristics similar to the exponential, but has the advantage of being shorter (the curve expands faster). The tractrix contour is recognised as being the most musical, the reason why it is not used more often in horn speaker design is due to the complexities of the calculations.

Marko Batista explores perception through physical properties of electronic sound in relation to the environment in which it is created, by means of which he wishes to inform the visitor about the aesthetics of the so-called “space sound”. The sound sculpture, like a frequency generator, is comprised of modules – temporary sound systems. Through experimental electro-chemical levers, these systems form a hybrid electro-acoustic whole as a rhizomatic sound system, which maps the architecture of sound in space. Electric impulses travel through a series of fluid substances and combine into sound stimuli. The sculpture emits a dynamic frequency selection of waves, which change with regard to the oscillation of value between electricity and chemical processes of the present reagents, through which the system is becoming a living organism.
